Vlado Martek’s artist’s books should be considered within the pre-poetry content. They are analytical and tautological; they explore the book form and consider its corporeality. Elements and tools for writing also appear here: pencils, erasers, paper – along with the processes that redefine the essential nature of books. The books were created in the spirit of exploration and resistance that characterized the time and are connected to Conceptual art and primary painting. Many of the artist’s books were created with the idea of blocking, closing, disabling them from being leafed through. Exactly the opposite of what is expected from books. The pages are bound with twine, stapled, glued with clay, etc. Some have writing in them but are still closed. Martek transforms the disabling of communication into a work by which he wishes to emphasize that the content is not important, rather the artist’s handling of the book, his behavior.
